GPU Performance Portability Workshop

Expressions of Interest are invited to attend a GPU Performance Portability Workshop.

If you’re a computational researcher within the STFC, IRIS, or Ada Lovelace Centre communities and are thinking about adapting your codebase for GPUs, this workshop is designed for you.

Organised by the DiRAC Training Academy as part of the UKRI-funded GPU Performance Portability Training project, it offers a practical opportunity to explore how GPU acceleration can enhance your research. Whether you’re an early career researcher or leading coding strategy and implementation within your group, you’ll gain valuable insights, practical skills and a network of peers and experts to support your next steps.

Beginning with a full day of engaging presentations, followed by two days of more hands-on, practical activities, you can take part in the workshop in one of two ways:

1. Day-one attendance – join for the opening day of presentations, with catering provided

2. Full 3-day residential package – attend the entire workshop with travel, accommodation and catering costs covered

Preliminary Programme

Day 1: Presentation sessions will introduce GPU hardware and survey the current software landscape, before covering adapting algorithms for greater GPU-effectiveness, and an introduction to software architecture. The day is completed with a focussed ”Deep Dive” led by an experienced practitioner with real-world insights from porting their own codes, and a supervised exercise in porting code from CPUs to GPUs using a selection of programming languages.

Days 2 & 3:  Activities shift further towards hands-on learning, with continued mentor-led exercises and further “Deep Dive” sessions. Further presentations will cover software engineering for multi-architecture software, performance monitoring and profiling, and both single-GPU and multi-GPU optimisation, as well as a review of other available GPU training packages. You’ll also have access to drop-in code clinics, where Research Software Engineers will offer tailored advice and guidance, whether you’re interested in refining existing code or planning the first steps towards GPU migration for your project.

Day 2 Networking Dinner:  Enjoy a relaxed evening connecting with fellow attendees who share similar goals and take the opportunity to exchange ideas, build connections and spark future research collaborations.

Venue:

The Orchard Hotel in Nottingham & Restaurant

Beeston Lane, Nottingham, NG7 2RJ
